Coffee pod machines are becoming more popular among people with busy lifestyles who want a quick, convenient cup of coffee. These machines require the use of pods, which are round, bun shaped filters containing pre measured ground coffee. Machines are made by Philips Senseo , but Bunn and a few other manufacturers are coming out with their own versions of coffee pod machines.

Coffee pod machines use low water pressure to push the water through the machines resulting in a good cup of coffee in a shorter amount of time. The level of water pressure is somewhere between an espresso machine and a traditional drip coffee maker. These machines brew one cup at a time, usually in under two minutes. The process couldn’t be simpler; you fill the water reservoir, place a pod in the pod holder and press a button.

Pod coffeemakers are becoming more popular

Pods must be used with pod coffee makers. Since pods come in a few different sizes, you will want to make sure the pod you are using is the right size to fit your machine. Smaller pods will result in weaker coffee and the wrong ones can give a bitter taste in the finished product. The coffee is packed in the pod to maximize pressure during brewing. The pressure through the pod creates foam on top that is similar to the crema on the top of a cup of espresso.

Java fans have a love-hate relationship with pod coffeemakers. Some think the aroma and flavor are similar to that found with canned coffee brewed in a drip coffee maker. Others feel the taste is weak and bitter. This group consists largely of those who prefer to use whole beans in a grinder prior to brewing. Most coffee drinkers agree that grinding fresh beans results in the best taste and aroma because the oils are released just before brewing. The longer the time between grinding and brewing, the more oils are lost. However, if you use ground coffee in a can, you will probably find the taste comparable. If you feel the taste is weak, you can use two pods in the pod holder for a stronger cup.
